Review on 📻 Sangean HDR-15 HD Radio AM/FM Clock Radio by Kimberly Brown

Don't bother (waste your time and money) with the best clock radio!

I was specifically looking for an alarm clock with HD radio which is very limited as of Nov/Dec 2019. I had a Teac that I bought from Costco years ago when HD radio was just starting out and it sounded great and worked well for many years. However, last summer the power button on it broke but luckily it had a remote so it could be bypassed and last November it started "going crazy", randomly changing the current time, mostly on a time that's not even maybe 11:45, I think he thought there was a new clock that was longer than 24 hours that he wanted to use. Basically, it has become very unreliable, which of course you do not want from an alarm clock. I tried this one, kept it for less than a week and sent it back. Terrible to describe, the sound quality is extremely disappointing and, frankly, unexpected. Sound quality is the main goal of HD radio. It failed by design, it only has one speaker, why make HD radio with one speaker? Smartphones from 10 years ago sounded better than this thing. Heck, my parents had clock radios in the 80's that sounded better than this one. I heard a cleaner "non-HD" AM radio that sounded better than that radio's "HD FM". I know it's not a question of location, like I said, I've had a Teac HD clock radio in the same location for years and haven't had any issues with the sound quality. This part still works and I've tried both in different rooms of the house just to see if it makes a difference and not so I returned it and threw in some extra money to get a Sparc SHD-T750 HD radio buy The Honest Sparc is far from perfect, but at least it sounds good and seems to work. If you're interested in USB charging, this Sangean includes USB charging, which for some reason Sparc removed from their latest version that I bought (apparently they also offered USB charging in the past). As if the sound quality (or better yet, lack thereof) wasn't bad enough, this Sangean's display isn't great either. Even on the brightest setting, it's not very bright and doesn't have enough contrast between the letter color and the background color. After all, the legs suck on it too, it's so light and has so little friction that it's very easy to knock it off the bedside table.

Pros
  • Very good value for money
Cons
  • Unbelievable price
