As a pediatric occupational therapist, I highy recommend this as a first crayon for scribbling. The shape of the crayon easily fits inside a little hand that can be held in a fisted palmer grasp pattern ( whole hand grasp) ,(a more mature radial palmer grasp (morebmature hand grasp of the thumb, index and thumb fingers against the palm), and facilitating separation of the thumb side of the hand from little finger side of the hand for achieving increased mobility of the fingers from a stable base of the hand. The crayon also promotes index finger isolaion as kids love to poke their fingers in the hole (you may need to stuff tissue in the holes to get kid to focus upon using them as drawing tools. The crayons stack so it also promotes bilateral coordination (one hand needs to hold the column for stability, while the other hand manipulates and stacks the crayons to stack them). For toddlers, and preschoolers, I recommend giving them a very large piece of paper so they can scribble away. I also recommend positioning the child on their tummies while scribbling or drawing to faciliate wrist, forearm and shoulder stability, needed for increased arm/ hand control. These crayons can also be used to teach cognitive skills of color identification, sequencing eg. First stack the blue crayon, then the red one). They promote visual motor coordination, visual perception and attention to task. Great product.
