Setting up the feeder wasn't difficult. Directions may have been improved from previous reviews. The problem we encountered was that the amount of food excreted at each feeding was different. (We tested it a few days before we went on vacation.) I ended up taking another reviewer's advice to feed once a day and set all four "feeding times" to the same time. So if a feeder threw away a TON of food, at least she didn't do it more than once a day. Our red-eared slider now gets 2 meals a day (and occasionally skips feeding due to irresponsible children) so 1 meal a day works great when we're away. I would suggest starting with a clean tank when you leave in case more food is thrown away than your pet is eating.
