69 year old 6ft 2in 225lb 140mm saddle. I've tried MANY saddles: Fizik, Specialized, Bontrager, Brooks, Rivet, SMP, SQ Labs, WTB, Selle Anatomica, Fabric... and probably others I forgot. There were saddles that failed immediately and others that seemed promising but became uncomfortable after an hour or more of riding. that I ride more seriously, my body has changed. I'm lighter, which is good, except there's less cushioning in the back. This is also a consequence of aging, along with greater sensitivity in the back. As a result, I've found that saddles that used to feel pretty perfect like the Specialized Power now don't offer enough cushioning for my skeletal butt. A year ago I ended up - figuratively and literally - on Ergon saddles. Both the SR and SM felt immediately more comfortable than anything I've tried. The usual shape is flat and wide with a large relief channel in the center of the saddle. I could live with either, but ordered the SMC hoping it would be a little softer, which is what I wanted. Voila! This is the first combination of the right shape, including a large 160mm width, and the pillow I was looking for. Unlike the short nose saddle (like the Power) it is long enough to be ridden comfortably. Three-hour drives - my longest to date - don't leave me uncomfortable. The saddle never "goes away" - I don't think that happens anymore. But my cock never complains and that's enough for me. Finally, let me share why leather saddles like the Rivet, Brooks B17, and Selle Anatomica didn't work for me. They are all around 175mm wide, which in theory should fit my 140mm sit bones. I never felt like any of them would break. Finally, I turned the B17 over and measured the distance between the horns of the cantela, the metal clip to which the skin is riveted. It turned out to be about 125mm. SA and Rivet are about the same. They never broke me because I was literally sitting on the frame. I really, really wanted to love all these saddles and read a lot of rave reviews about their comfort. I bet all these leather freaks have skinny asses than me. The SMC and almost all modern saddles lack the framework for a monocoque design. So if you're as wide-legged as I am, be careful.
