Riding through the streets or through mud and falling usually hurts the legs, especially the knees. I like to wear them over riding jeans with knee pads because they don't protect your shins and knee pads will hurt your shins if you fall. These with the extra strap stay in place, I've crashed with them and can tell you they work. I put them on over my riding jeans and remove them at destination, the 3 velcro straps are easy to put on and take off but snap securely and protect knees to calf. Combined with a high ankle or high boots your feet are safe.
