does not work with AA batteries

All I get is Err (blinks no less) when I try to use Neewer with any of the 3 recommended AA batteries. The En-el also works well as a secondary device, but it's not what I need if there's no way to charge the camera's batteries. I checked, studied and checked again. Maybe the block is defective? Remember that "first class only costs twice as much". Maybe even a little more in this case.
