Smaller skis are unsafe, not anti-theft

The best thing about this unit is that it's easy to set up and use, and I was even able to get it up and running from the first use in less than 5 minutes. This is important because you can't leave it on for more than a day and a half without damaging the device's magnetic seal or stripping the paint off your car. You basically have to take it off and put it back on every time you use it. However, there are some real downsides. First, it would be easy for someone to steal the entire mount along with your skis. Anyone with a screwdriver and a pair of strong scissors could slip something under the magnets, break the seal, cut the nylon seat belts, and take the whole thing away. Of course they would then have to figure out how to remove the skis from the bindings, but the easiest way would be to just slide them off the ends of the skis. This could have been done very easily, maybe even on the spot, and you would have a broken bracket, a scratched car roof and no skis. I would absolutely hate to leave my skis unattended in the car in these bindings. Given this serious design flaw, it seems safer to have a padlock and key on the padlock for transport (so the top lever doesn't open due to a loose lock) than for the anti-theft device. Another big problem is that this doesn't work very well with very thin skis. It holds my adult skis well but kids skis slide everywhere and I could even wobble them completely free without removing the bindings. If you only carry children's skis you can place the two bindings close together to prevent loosening, but if you carry a combination of adult and children's skis, you're out of luck. This is a medium that I can use, but with caution. I have to be very careful not to leave my skis unattended in the car and will most likely only use them for easy day trips going straight up the mountain and back. No lunch breaks on the way back as it wouldn't be long before I was left unattended in the wrong parking lot and found myself without skis.

Pros
  • Decent performance
Cons
  • Big and bulky
