I bought this mattress for my retired relatives as a thank you for everything they do for us. Her old mattress was a mattress pad, but after sleeping in our home on our memory foam mattress a few months ago, watching the kids and hearing how well they sleep, we just had to see if that would be an improvement. Our memory foam mattress was 12 inches and we paid about $2,000 for it 9 years ago. This wasn't the cheapest we found on Amazon, but it looked like a good deal and I wanted to see how the gel memory foam was. The product arrived in a large yellow box via Prime shipping. In the box, the mattress was folded in half and folded flat in a cellophane sleeve, contained in some sort of plastic bag, along with an envelope and a magazine, a guarantee card with a funny cartoon about a thief falling asleep on a Sweetnight mattress and getting caught robbing a house. There was also a small letter opener in the packaging which I used to cut up the plastic holding it together and then unwrapped it onto my mother-in-law's queen-size pencil box. Then I cut open one end of the plastic bag she was still holding and removed the bag from the mattress as if pulling an envelope from a letter. The first thing I noticed was how quickly the mattress came loose. Our mattress 9 years ago took about 48 hours to noticeably deflate, while this mattress expanded from 6-7 inches high to 10 inches in a matter of seconds. I lay down on him, feeling completely relaxed and fluffy soft. I read in the owner's manual that one side of the mattress is firmer than the other, so I decided to video record the difference between the two sides. My 6 year old daughter walked and jumped on the mattress with a glass of water in the middle, soft side up first, then harder side up. You could see in the video that the soft side imparts good movement by just walking on the mattress, while the stiffer side has to jump to actually see the water moving (well, you could see if Revane gave me allowed to upload more than one video, but it's not, so I just uploaded the hard side that my relatives wanted to sleep on). How does that translate to lying in bed? Well, my in-laws chose the firm side because they were concerned that a mattress that was too soft might cause back problems. After 3 nights (the time the instructions state to allow the bed to expand) it's the best night's sleep in years and they never stop thanking us for the amazing mattress. Although they didn't notice a difference from the 1st to the 3rd night, I'm not sure if it expanded much at all. They see no need to try the softer side of the mattress, so far they are happy with it. Pros: Good price, easy to install, quick decompression, soft and cool, plus a fun little cartoon. Cons: Like all memory foam mattresses, has the faintest foam smell, but after putting sheets on it I honestly stopped smelling it, and the directions say the faint smell dissipates quickly.
