Review on πŸ”΄ Efficient Cooling Solution: Derale 16795 PWM Fan Controller in Vibrant Red by Ryan Richards

nope Do not do that. suitable for electrical controls

First, I'm always optimistic. I see bad reviews about such devices and think that people installed it or RTFM wrong and therefore have bad experience. I installed a dual derale fan shroud on my ZJ and am happy with it. So I jumped at the chance to buy their high performance PWM fan controller for $180. I was very excited to give my generator a much needed break and get some fuel economy back. I received the device on Sunday. It was nice and heavy, looked good and came with everything needed to install. On Monday after work I spent several hours doing a clean install. drum roll. defect out of the box. He was just working flat out. I set the pot to turn on at the correct temperature, but then it just ran at full power until the temperature dropped to about 30 degrees, then it turned off and made horrible noises. It never went up or down. Only runs at 100%. It just worked like a relay. After I turned off the engine and the fans stopped blowing, I heard faint PWM working in the engines (see video). I heard the ripple frequency gradually increase, but this current wasn't enough to spin the fans. When I wired my DMM in series, I found that the current was only 0.25A, which is not enough to even spin a fan. Called Derala, spoke to tech support and the guy told me to reset the unit by turning the potentiometer 25 turns counterclockwise and then reset it. I've done this and haven't noticed any change in behavior. Without taking the block apart to see its innards, I'm forced to believe it's either poorly designed (which is hard to imagine since it's not a very complex circuit), poor component selection, or poor craftsmanship and quality control (since it looked like it was made out of boxes). Probably a combination of things, like most failures. In general, even if it worked properly, the block seems too small for 65A to me. Heat is the number one killer for power electronics and I think the terminals are small, they heat up quickly in operation and even when working , I can imagine that they will soon burn down, especially in AZ. Really disappointed for a product claiming to be made in the USA and at this price point. If it cost $25 I would expect the same. I'm glad I bought it from Revain as based on the other reviews here I don't want to deal with returns via Derale and don't need a replacement. I went with the AUTO COOL 85 PWM controller instead. For about the same money, it looks a bit more solid. I will give an update on how it goes.
