USB - doesn't work for me

I liked the sleek look and it arrived quickly, but it just didn't suit me. I bought a 2020 MacBook Pro and a USB to get more access to my extra monitor and mouse. I plugged it in and within an hour it was getting very hot and draining half the battery. And none of my devices worked when I plugged them into the USB ports. I thought it was me and asked my grandson (18) to check it out and he tried different things. He said "Grandma return it, it doesn't work." So I bought another dongle for my monitor which connects to my laptop and wireless mouse and life is great.
