Review on Davis & Sanford W3 Foldable Dolly with Handle by Jonathan Lloyd

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Good dolly but I recommend a DYI update.

I've been looking for a simple and practical trolley for a long time. Tiffen, Opteka, and Ravelli make affordable carts, but they didn't have an option that every cart operator needed, which was pneumatic wheels. I was impressed with a product called "Orbit Dolly" but the price is ridiculously high (starting at $1700). The Orbit Dolly is the only dolly I've found with an air wheel option, and it's a $300 add-on. That's too expensive for such a cheap part to manufacture. So I decided to buy an affordable cart and add my own pneumatic wheels. There are two main differences between this car and the "Orbital Car". First, the Orbital Cart has interchangeable wheels. You can switch the wheels from hard acyclic to soft pneumatic tires for use on both hard and carpeted floors. Second, the Orbit Dolly can be calibrated to move in a circle or arc around the subject you're shooting. These are both nice features, but hardly come with a $2,000 price tag. The Tiffen Cart is easily able to mimic the "Orbital Cart" (except for the adjustable bow setting) with a single DIY upgrade. I really didn't want or have $2,000 to spend on what I thought was very basic gear. So I ordered this cart with the intention of adding pneumatic wheels. I started looking online for a company that sold air rollers that were compatible with this cart. I found Custer City in California. The casters are now $100 more than the cart, for a total price of $200. But the difference in price between this and the Orbit Dolly is worth it. After ordering the wheels, I went to the hardware store and bought three 1/2" chrome nuts, three lock washers, and three regular 1/2" flat washers along with a 1/2" drill bit for drilling metal. I removed the original wheels, moved the tripod locking brackets back about an inch, and drilled a 1/2" hole where the original wheels used to be. I then put a lock washer on the new rollers, threaded the new rollers 1/2" x 1" and 1/2" studs through everything, put a regular flat washer on the stud and tightened the 1/2". nut on the screw. It works great and now I can use the tripod on both hard and soft surfaces without worrying about the cart bouncing or bouncing on different surfaces. The trolley is lightweight and is mainly made of aluminum with some plastic. The legs spread and lock with a spring pin for two legs, the other leg is locked permanently. The legs easily fold in and release the locking pins. There is a handle in the center of the device for easy carrying and storage. I highly recommend buying this cart and also adding the pneumatic wheels. I don't regret it and will buy at least one more car like this, which I will also upgrade.
