Three things make these Helping Hands great: simplicity, practicality, durability. It's simply because it doesn't have all the fancy (and often useless) lights and other stuff that isn't really needed. Half the time these things don't work very well or get in the way. This is useful in several ways. For example, alligator clips are removed with thumbscrews. Clamps are available at most home improvement or hardware stores. It's not bad. If they break or you want to use a different type with same sized ends that fit the bushings, it's easy to replace. Another example, other thumbscrews allow you to turn it to almost any possible angle you can think of. In terms of strength, the base is heavy for its size. It's heavy metal, unlike a lot of cheap plastic that will topple over when tipped into certain positions. While it's not heavy enough to hold your item, there's enough rim at the base to accommodate something to add weight. Overall I think so. - Very versatile - Interchangeable alligator clips - Fairly heavy base - Well balanced - All metal (no plastic parts)
