Although this may be difficult for novice Arduino users. Open source is extremely useful. Many have used PWM ports, but in fact the only one absolutely necessary for it to be PWM is the OUT cable. LEDs can be easily desoldered if you want them to capture emitted light (i.e. the color of the LED) and not reflected light (the color of the object). I've currently bought about 4-5 of these and I won't hesitate to buy them again!
