This is a really good scanner for an amateur photographer and probably good enough for many professionals. to. Downloading and installing the software went smoothly. The installation guide was accurate and the instruction manual is clearly written. Most importantly, the scanner worked well right out of the box. It's solidly built. Even the film holders are pretty solid. The program is really very simple. Very few settings need to be adjusted (but keep in mind that you have to go to the settings screen to enable the dust removal feature). The dust extraction worked very well. This is one of the features I wish my old Nikon CoolScan had. File sizes are not unreasonable. The recommended resolution of 1800 dpi at 24-bit color produces a 3 MB JPG file, which is equivalent to a 5 megapixel image. On the other hand, 7200 dpi with 48-bit color produces a 363 MB TIFF file, which corresponds to a 78 megapixel image. That's a lot of storage space. I look forward to converting the thousands of slides I have in my closet into usable digital images with this machine.
