Review on INDMEM A1708 Non Touch 2016 Mid Upgrade by Ryan Arthur

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Write performance below average

My A1708 MBP had a defective SSD. It is only recognized under certain conditions during boot (battery <75%, not connected). I bought a Sintech adapter but didn't use it due to various problems. When I saw this $160 512GB replacement, I decided to take a chance and give it a try. I struggled a bit with their instructions on how to open my A1708 but ended up watching a few youtube videos on how to open it. Physically, in contrast to the Sintech solution, the disc has the shape of the original (see pictures). No problem to reinstall macOS by following the instructions. I charged my MBP to 100% and put it to sleep. 16 hours later I opened it up again and the battery was at 74%. The reason I can't give this 5 stars is that it can't compete with the Apple original in performance. My best Blackmagicdesign read speed was 1600MB/s. The best write speed was 1365 MB/s, but this was only maintained for a few seconds. My worst write speed was 45MB/s. This has been unofficially confirmed by some excruciatingly lengthy software reinstallations. I suspect there is a write cache that improves performance for general use, but this drive is useless for write-intensive applications. However, I wasn't expecting a price upgrade, I just wanted to make my MBP usable again, and it is.
