Good but Short - Document Scanner

ADVANTAGES: Size, speed, ease of use. Assigns a numbered ID and saves without stopping, can save to PC or SD card, scans at 600 dpi, comes with 5x7 document media CONS: cleaning, photos need to be cropped, they need to be plugged in, poor documentation, no document carrier included or available for full size documents --------------- Like most other reviewers, I wanted to quickly and easily scan some free photos. I have flatbed scanners that work reasonably well, but boxes with family photos scattered about took too long to scan them all. So I decided to try this one. In the beginning it was joy. The quality was good, there were 2 scan settings available and scanning directly to an SD card all you had to do was transfer the images one at a time. I've looked through a few and tested them on my computer to make sure they're great. I used it for a few days, scanned about 100 at a time, then moved them to my computer to review, crop to size and move to a file to erase the card and move on. (I don't know how much fits on an 8GB card at 600dpi, but I've never filled it with 100 or more at once.) However, on the second batch, I saw a spooky streak at the edge of my scanned images. That was to be expected as others reported it, but I was sure I would be one of the lucky ones. It's worth pointing out here that the instructions that came with this product aren't very helpful, so it took me a while to figure out how to clean the thing using the little tool that came with it. But unfortunately the remedy didn't remove the pesky scratch. I have to assume there is dust or dirt on the lens that I just can't get at. It's always in the same place, and since it's on the side of the scanner where the document needs to be attached in order to work, it's in the most noticeable spot. I was forced to go back to my flatbed scanners. While this works well for paper documents and items that might have streaks along an edge, it doesn't work for photos unless I find a way to clean it up. Since this is such a predictable problem, the manufacturer casually doesn't offer a more efficient solution. As my recommendation I would caution people to keep looking but be aware that probably ALL scanners this compact will have a similar problem. I would advise you to carefully consider how to clean the scanner before making any decisions.
