Review on 🏍️ Sena Motorcycle Bluetooth Headset Communication System: Enhanced Connectivity for Seamless Riding Experience by Jacob Sampino

Revainrating 4 out of 5

After 8 years with SMH5 this was a big upgrade

I've only owned Sena headsets before so I won't compare them to Cardo or similar. But this is my second Sena headset and I've owned the last one for many years so I'll compare them. My SMH5 was a workhorse. It rained several times in the United States, hail. I've never handled it very well, but only had to replace the internal battery once. I was very happy with it, but wanted to try "HD audio" and mesh as I had some friends with 30K and 50S headsets. After reading many articles I settled on the 50R because I liked the assembly better than the 50S and I didn't need the extra features of the 50S. The build quality of the 50R is very good. It feels like a high dollar. The Seine has always had good facilities. Although the app is absolutely terrible. I can't understand how bad this is. It took me over an hour to get the Wi-Fi adapter connected to my network - I'm not sure it's even worth setting up the Wi-Fi adapter as updating the firmware manually is very easy. The 50 series has voice commands, which is new to me, and they work well, but not great. I don't think he likes my southern accent. If it works, it's great. The HD sound is definitely noticeable. They're still headphone speakers, but noticeably better than my SMH5. It's nice to have a radio just in case I'm out in bad weather - I don't see myself using it any other way. It's also nice to be able to connect multiple Bluetooth devices to the headset. I drive a BMW F750GS with Connected TFT and have set up the Sena to connect to it and my iPhone. This means the BMW can control the music as long as the headset picks up a Bluetooth signal from a bike or phone or whatever. It also means that if I switch to another bike, it works the same, just without the BMW hub in the middle. I couldn't do this with my SMH5, so that alone was enough to upgrade. And finally the grid. The grille is definitely cool - no friends, it honestly works as advertised. I usually stay on an open web and we actually ran into another group that was on the same channel and we all chatted for a few minutes before going our separate ways - you definitely can't do that with the old technology. I've found that sitting next to my partner at a red light or similar can break the mesh. I'm not sure if it's because we're too close or something, but it usually goes away after about 20 seconds. Also, the grid eats up the battery. I can definitely tell when I've had a Grid for a long time, not just Bluetooth music streaming. Now I understand why the grille has a separate on/off switch. But fast charging means you can easily top up your battery at bus stops, which is great. All in all a great upgrade - glad I kept the SMH5 for so long and hope the 50R will last just as long.
