Even though I washed it, I got absolutely no charcoal or blackish water. Easy to use, does not get dirty, filters very well, just cut. I've used boxed filters, but they're so low in activated carbon and filter media that they clog or quickly become ineffective. So get out of the habit of buying a box and buying that and some filter material to trim. Every aquarium is different depending on how many fish you have and how much you feed, but my filtration system lasts 3-4 weeks, sometimes longer.
