After my trusty (40 year old) Denon receiver spat out a hairball, I entered the phono preamp market for the first time. I decided the phono stage is a simple device - how to screw it up? I would be kind enough to say that the cheap record made my records sound like crap - it was really awful. In contrast, this block works perfectly. I know there are hi-fi enthusiasts out there who pick the cork and think you have to spend a lot of money on each component to get every last drop. It is not true. As someone who has spent a lot of time in studios and mastering labs critically listening to masters and proofs, I can assure you that this little guy is doing a great job. Signal range represented by different entries. Don't be afraid to let the gain go into the flickering red region, as long as it's only on the loudest transients. This does not affect the fidelity.
