What you need: Parts

If you're looking at this, you probably already know that there are literally a hundred or more similar cigarette lighter splitters to choose from, ranging from cheap nameless models to very expensive ones. much. What attracted me the most about it was the Cable Matters brand. This is one of the few remaining companies making such products that I can trust these days. That's actually too much for what I need and probably applies to most people. I already have an old very durable splitter that I'm using that will probably last forever given its simple design. But it was built in the days when cars and trucks had a cigarette lighter socket in the dash and the size and shape of the splitter didn't matter much. Now that I have a small Mercedes roadster with only a cigarette lighter socket, located in the back of the center console next to the armrest, my needs have changed a bit. A splitter is required, I need a place to charge my phone and I need a place to plug in a DVR. And maybe not necessarily, but it would be nice if the passenger could plug in the phone or I could charge my headphones or I could have another device with me because I was born to always have devices around me. WHAT IT DOES BETTER Topping the list of things I love is, let's face it, I spend a thousand dollars on my phones these days and wouldn't want to plug them into a cheap nameless charger. This company has built a reputation as a company I can trust. Next is the reality for me in my small sports car, which also applies to my big SUV: if I put something in the center console, I don't want it to stick out and not only look unattractive, but also attract criminals. Coincidentally, both of my cars ended up with a very thin, flat, sliding cap connector. I couldn't ask for anything better so I can keep it on all the time. But when I leave it on it's the opposite of what I want, I don't need anything that constantly drains power and can drain my battery. This device cleverly features a real push button power switch and, even cleverer, a voltage meter built right into the switch. Impressively. BTW, a little overlooked detail is that the lighter connectors are made of 360-degree metal, not just a thin piece of wire. This ensures an ultra-tight contact with the connector. HOW IT WORKS Now we get to the nitty-gritty of actual usage. Well, I don't smoke so I don't need a lighter, but the space they've put in both my cars isn't the best place for charging cords to stick out, and even less convenient for plugging in my dash cams. , which I want to completely disable and hide from prying eyes. BTW, like many other similar devices these days, my DVR doesn't use a lighter connector, so it's nice that I can plug its USB connector straight into this splitter. It's also a plus that my phone likes to be plugged into a USB-C port, and yes, this thing has one of those too. The cable is long enough that I can hide it out of sight to install the working end exactly where it's most convenient, which for me is the side of the dash I don't use for anything else. I hold it in place with double sided tape. NOT THAT GREAT, don't deduct points for people's taste, it's not fair, just because I don't care doesn't mean it's a bad product. I'm talking about the form. I prefer a simple rectangle with rounded corners rather than curved ends. It's just out of place in most modern car interiors. But that's really a secondary issue. YES OR NO. I'm not going to delve into voltage measurements and such, I never know if a person is using these calibrated devices or just making assumptions. And there are too many variables related to power loads, cable losses and the like for voltage measurements to matter. I have to trust Cable Matters to know what they're doing. Bottom line, it's a very well designed device and also very practical. This is exactly what I need and no matter what I plug in it works as I would expect. I think it's definitely worth a look.
