Review on SanDisk 8GB Clip Jam MP3 Player (Orange) by Daryl Barton

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Compatibility issues, slow performance and Rockbox won't start

I had to do some research. uses a mini USB cable. I thought the wider buttons would be easier to use, and the microUSB port means I can use whatever cables I already have with my phone. What I didn't expect were some new firmware changes from Sandisk. and not for the better. Cons: -The contents of the SD card are no longer indexed with the contents of the internal memory, making this device a 4GB + 32GB player for me (not a 36GB player). Music on the map is in a separate menu on the main screen. The loading time has increased. The lack of a dedicated power button means that the middle button performs multiple contextual functions, and holding the middle button to turn off the player doesn't always work (as this action is duplicated by the "Add to playlist" function in the menu). The new chipset used by Sandisk means that the device cannot work with Rockbox. After playing for a long time (30 minutes), some songs cause the player to crash and show "File format not supported" and then "No media!". I have to hard reset the device to get it playing again - something I don't want to do in a race. Pros: The headphones that come with the player are pretty good for an additional product. The volume control is now much more precise. The main menu is customizable, which means if all your music is on the SD card, you can remove the music menu entirely. The player itself is quite waterproof unlike some previous models. To be honest all this hassle meant I had to go with the Clip Zip and Rockbox, but it's too late for me to return it now and it's not terrible player. just not as good as previous iterations.

Pros
  • Deep, rich sound quality with built-in micro SD card expansion slot
