Neither the drive nor the computer would work at all.

I bought this to transfer data from different hard drives to different computers. Couldn't get it to work on any computer (3) of them or (10) possible 2.5 or 3.5 hard drives. Old, new, it doesn't matter, the red LED was very dim and didn't work. Once when I was able to turn on one of my drives on a new computer, Win 10 indicated that the USB device was not recognized, the blue LED lit up for a few seconds and then went out. The other adapters I have are externally powered, they work great so I know all ports, computers and drives are working.
