This tent has been treated with Tris(1,3-dichloro-2-propyl)phosphate (TDCPP) flame retardant. Under California's controversial (and somewhat silly) Proposition 65, it is considered a chemical to cause "cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm." For some reason I couldn't find the disclosure on the Revain listing or on the product packaging. The truth is that almost all tents sold in the United States were treated with flame retardants due to an outdated standard called CPAI-84, which was adopted by the industry in the 70's when tents were made from paraffin coated canvas. I know Proposition 65 has a lot of problems, but even a broken clock shows the correct time twice a day. I've read enough about these flame retardants to believe they are dangerous. There are documents that are publicly available through the National Institutes of Health if you want to read about them. Even REI published an article entitled "Introducing Flame Retardants in Camping and Hiking Tents" acknowledging the dangers surrounding tents and flame retardants. Google it if you're interested. REI even went so far as to recommend wearing gloves when setting up the tent and not wearing a raincoat to allow the tent to ventilate. Think about it: One of the largest camping gear retailers claims that the flame retardant chemicals in tents are so dangerous that you shouldn't touch your tent with your bare hands and that the air inside the tent isn't safe to breathe. Outdoor enthusiasts do their own research, don't believe me. Put pressure on the companies you buy outdoor products from. They exist because we allow them by giving them our money. We as consumers have every right to demand a safe product. I gave this product a bad review because the chemicals in the tents are not listed. In my correspondence with Hyke and Byke, it sounds like they don't have a Proposition 65 warning on the Revain list because they are waiting for something in the Revain bureaucracy to approve the update. Unfortunately this answer isn't good enough - I've already bought a tent based on misleading information. I gave them 2 stars instead of 1 because the customer service was quick and friendly.
