Two useful tips for Vista users. I upgraded my Dell Inspiron 1501 Vista hard drive. I used free cloning software "Easeus" to clone my hard drive to a new hard drive. The new hard drive did not boot. I noticed that the drive letters assigned to the cloned hard drive are different from my C and D drives on the original hard drive. I searched and searched and finally found a thread on the Easeus site that stated that you cannot access the new drive or even the old drive after cloning. Shut down the computer immediately and swap drives before attempting to boot into Vista. I did this and the new disk booted----and the drive letters became the original C and D. Also note that you need to extend partitions after cloning. There is also free software for this.
