I didn't have high hopes that this would actually work as I had two dining chairs and both needed repairs. One was pretty much torn, so it looked a lot better on tape. However, it doesn't stick well enough for me to really want to use the chair, especially since the vinyl sweats when you sit on it in shorts etc. So I expect it to start immediately. If you don't plan to use furniture then I think this is quite enough, like someone is coming up to you and you have to look like your stuff isn't falling apart (just don't let them get too close to see it or sit on the chairs). Inevitably, I really only have to repair them or get new ones (which is actually impossible with my salary). The restoration is something of a DIY project, which I'm not looking forward to. I think the $10 ribbon bought me some time but I don't know if it was really worth the money because like I said I have to do something else to refurbish the chairs to actually use them be able. It will probably work well on a couch where there isn't as much direct contact as it would on a dining room chair that is constantly being sat on, but this tape will not be particularly strong for regular use.
