These LED dot matrix displays are very easy to use and connect. There are several Arduino libraries for displaying English letters and Arabic numerals, as well as custom sprites. For my application (displaying received Hell Schreiber symbols with a 7x7 dot matrix) I took the code from a library called MaxMatrix and made additional changes to the code. Remember that these modules are intended for the Chinese, whose traditional books (written on bamboo sticks) are organized in such a way that the characters are read from top to bottom. So the module is arranged so that the characters go from top to bottom, as opposed to the western mode from left to right. So, in a left-to-right order, "columns" and "rows" are actually "rows" and "columns."
