when I bought a used cargo trailer a few years ago the left tailgate latch was already broken. From my lay inspection of the weld I concluded that the weld had been improperly done and probably looked more like a tailor than a weld. Door open. I definitely wanted something that was more likely to stay for a long time. I just didn't do anything until this month. Although many reviews said this bar was too big, I decided to take a chance and use it. When I received a new latch and checked it for size, I found that it was the same size as the latch on the right side of the action, judging by the receiver plate and the two weld holes the left latch attaches to was. Another mistake made by the previous owner was not using all the parts from the latch kit. Without the base plate, the handle is too far forward from where it should be to fit the hole in the plate that mates with the trailer rail, especially if the receiving plate has been welded in where it needs to match the base plate. Place. I refer to the base plate as a flat plate with two screw holes that fits on one side of the handle. I have included a picture of this welded latch to show that the latch does not have a backing plate. The curved plate above the handle is welded directly to the gate without a shim as a spacer. I used a couple of quick release skewers to check the fit of the parts and saw that they all fit. For me and my application it doesn't matter that the handle base plate is wider than the square tube of the hitch. I still have enough room on the outside edge to allow the gate to swing up and down freely when the latch is off. Also, this kit is the same size as the gate latch on the right side. I already had some self-tapping screws, but I needed longer, larger-diameter screws. The holes in the base plate were too big for the #10 screws I had, so I used a #14 x 1-1/2" self-tapping hex head. To make assembly easier, I also used a ¼ x ½ flat washer used under each bolt. These bolts and washers did the trick. If you have the same application, note that 1-1/4" bolts will also work. Barring glitches, I don't expect this new latch to need replacing. it's forever
