Review on SportRack Pursuit 3 Bike Anti Sway Trunk by Mark Green

Great trunk, not much quality control

First off, the Sportrack Pursuit is a great trunk and this model is a nice improvement over the 20 year old version it replaced. Easily adaptable to any sedan, SUV, and even the sophisticated Toyota Prius is a great feature. You don't have to worry if it is suitable for your next vehicle. The way the tote bags and straps work to properly secure your bike is impeccable and superbly designed while remaining simple. Yes, people with not very strong hands might have trouble tightening the straps, but even loose straps will do, so the bike might wobble a bit, but don't worry. My only issue with this rack is that it wasn't assembled properly and somehow passed quality control. The angle adjustment component that attaches to the frame and arms had to be glued to the tubular steel structure and they were not attached at all. As a mechanical engineer I figured out the problem and used E6000 glue to attach them, but most people wouldn't figure it out and the stand is virtually unusable with this manufacturing flaw. I'm sure this will be addressed by the manufacturer and I still recommend this rack if this happens to you. Also, I don't think side straps are necessary and in over 20 years of using this rack I have never used them and cut them off immediately. If you tighten the vertical straps properly, you won't have any wobble issues unless you're driving an Indy 500 and cornering at 180 mph. Drive smart and side belts are completely superfluous. The rack is of such high quality that you can expect it to last indefinitely and the straps are interchangeable although my 20 year old straps on the old rack are still good. There are more expensive roof racks out there, and if money isn't an issue I like the Saris Bones rack, but the Sportrack Pursuit gets the job done very efficiently. There are also cheaper suitcases, don't let that fool you either.
