Over the years I've used the excellent Acratech ball head mostly for architectural work, but this Manfrotto 405 head is just what I needed. The pens are very precise and blend into your internal screen grid (I'm using a Canon 5ds), no "close enough I'll smooth that out in Photoshop" and you know who you are. This is a tool that will make your work easier and more correct the first time, just buy it. The only downside is that it's heavy and you don't want to drop it and break it. UPDATE: After about a year and a half of using this head, the gearing system deteriorated - first I noticed play in the base plate (not cool for an architectural photographer like me), soon after I could use the "super accurate" toggle knob. At this price it shouldn't happen in just two years and I'm good with my gear. There may be a lemon, but that's unacceptable for a company like Manfrotto.
