Device failed initially. The maximum transfer rate with SSDs (either JBOD or R0) was below 44 MB/s for sequential reads. The same USB 3 connector (immediately after the tests above) delivered a sequential read of 114 MB/s with a cheap flash drive, so there was no connection problem on the computer I was using. Often the drives weren't recognized after being plugged in or powered on, and changing the raid to R1 never let the drives mount. All configurations and changes are well documented in the online manual (the supplied manual doesn't contain any important steps), but the device just didn't work properly. Furthermore, one of the main reasons for choosing this device was the included fan for cooling. hard drives. That's a useless feature on this device, however, as there's only a tiny input slot at the bottom edge of the faceplate, and it sits well below the lower dial. There is no airflow around or over the discs so the cooling effect will be very limited.
