According to the websites we live only 35 miles from our main transmission towers (but I always thought we were a little further away). We still had poor reception with most antennas. This and the amazing support of Antennas Direct has finally allowed us to break away from the satellite TV service. We added grilles and a signal splitter/amplifier to the antenna to improve picture quality. One of our TVs has a bad digital tuner so we already had a different amp to improve reception on that unit and we used the Android app to make sure we were pointing in the right direction. Now every TV in our house receives about 50+ channels. Many of them are repeated (several NBC affiliates, .), but we are very satisfied. We bought a very cheap umbrella stand and put it on plywood in the attic. The straight metal bar in the stand serves as a great antenna mast, allowing us to adjust directivity for better channel reception (the J-shaped antenna mounts didn't give us much flexibility when we were looking for better reception). We have a lot of wind, ultraviolet rays and snow, which made us reluctant to install these or other plastic antennas outside on the eaves. We are very pleased that free TV is complemented by streaming internet.
