Review on πŸŽ’ Canvas Blackburn Wayside Backpack Pannier by Jesse Wells

So close to being the perfect bag/trunk

I've been eyeing this bag for a long time and finally decided to give it a try. Before purchasing I tried to read and view as many reviews as possible. When I searched I did not find the detailed photos I was hoping for, so here is my test report with detailed photos. if not on a bike. I don't like the shoulder straps on most baskets so this one looked promising as a backpack too. It seemed to check all my boxes, large main compartment, multiple side pockets, easily portable (backpack), attaches to bike rack and looks stylish as a bonus. Unfortunately, this bag was far from the best when I picked it up and tried it out. The main problem I had was the same as most people with how to attach it to the rack. The top is held in place by two large velcro straps which I think will fit. The lower part is attached with two small but too big ears for its purpose. As shown in the photos, a tab appears to be attached decently as it is where the three bars meet and is thicker. The other tab holds the bar very loosely. With this method of attachment, the bag sits EXTREMELY slack on the rack and moves with little to no effort. That's with an empty pocket, I could only imagine how much it would get full and sloshing around in the street. Another issue I had with the attachment loops was that the bottom grommets are not attached to the bag, they just thread through the loop. That. I discovered this when I first installed it, removed it and after a few minutes found that one of the tabs had fallen off. You need to be very careful and attentive when loosening the bottom tabs, otherwise you can easily lose them and then this bag will become awful like a basket. Now for the attachment to the frame. This isn't the quickest or easiest way, but tying 4 velcro straps to the post isn't difficult. If the straps were more secure I would be more willing to put up with that than the lighter quick release bags that other companies have. I have no idea what they do to fight so much or for so long. It didn't take more than 15-20 seconds and it was an easy task. With all that, I haven't even tried this bag on the road. I wasn't sure how it attached with an empty bag and a stationary bike. I didn't want to risk losing the bag halfway and then messing around with making it more secure the rest of the way. Overall this can be a great bag. I love this style, two large front pockets for small items that you also want quick access to, it has a large main compartment and can be used as a backpack or a basket. Unfortunately, the fastening system is the biggest disadvantage and turns what is probably a 5-star bag into a 2-star bag. If they changed the attachment system to something more secure and secure, this bag would absolutely be 5 stars in my book.
