How to repair an old

If you hear a lot of filter rattle or rumble or if it's just loud and loud it's not the sound of water, it could be a worn rod. What happens is that over time the impeller makes millions of revolutions and the stainless steel rod wears out. You will notice that there is some clearance between the impeller bore and the shaft. There shouldn't be a game. If you have a jewelry loop loupe, you can see how the stem gets thinner as it gets closer to the impeller. You can replace this rod for much less than buying a new one. Here's what you need to do.1. Take a pair of needle nose pliers and clamp the rod just under the end cap, when the end cap is at 12 o'clock hold the end of the pliers at 4 o'clock and then rotate the pliers at 2 o'clock and this should pry the cap off.2. Remove the shaft, at this point there is another end cap on the other end of the shaft.3. At this point you can do 1 of 2 things, get petroleum jelly as others have said, cover the shaft with it and reassemble (this might help you for a few days) OR 3b. Buy 2.5mm stainless steel bars on Amazon. They come in packs of 10 at 300mm so you can make 30 if needed. Use your old rod to determine the correct length and use a cutter and grinder or leather tool to cut it to that exact length to smooth it out. Just make sure the length is correct.5. Apply petroleum jelly to the rod and connect it to the end caps. You will have plenty of material for additional waves. I bought this new one because I needed it in a pinch, but I kept the old one and bought new stainless steel rods so I'll have it ready when this new one goes. Poorly. I will just swap the shafts and never buy a new one again.
