The Garmin Edge 500 is a fantastic product. I rode road bikes for many years and figured my CatEye bike computers would do. So I hesitated to buy but have been happy ever since. The main advantages of this computer are: - Dedicated device with long battery life: It does one thing very well - tracks and displays speed and distance. -- Small and light: crucial for road builders! -- Easy to set up (although reading order required!) -- Excellent visibility in low light: I drive early in the morning and it's dark 8 months of the year when I start. -- Syncs with Strava and RidewithGPS - No data plan required: essential for driving in Canada. We visit a lot and my phone uses up lots of dollars of data to track the trip. This device doesn't need it, so I can log every ride and upload the data when we come back. - Solid HRM: The only time I see weird readings is when the battery is low. The deluxe harness is comfortable and durable (just hand wash and air dry). Although a Garmin error occurs about every 3 months, eventually it will be fixed and the ride logged. Rely on this device to determine direction, altitude or ambient temperature. These features are there but not trusted. Doesn't matter? is there a hill Stand up. When you're done, download the file and search online for the exact height. I'm not a fan of the mount provided by Garmin. I immediately bought a wickedly expensive K-Edge mount and was happy. I use a Garmin mount on my rain bike and it slides and moves and just feels wobbly. All in all a great device for road cyclists on familiar roads. I would upgrade to the map version if I was touring or off-road.
