Review on Capture Timeless Moments with the Canon AE-1 35mm Film Camera & 50mm 1:1.8 Lens by James Mayberry

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Great camera for film cameras

I've used 5 films in a month with this camera and I love it. I bought it as a tribute to the Soviet Zenit 12xp SLR I photographed a few years ago and this Canon AE-1 gives the best result. Although it's almost fully automatic (remember it won't work without a battery and won't work if you use the manual aperture), it feels like an old fully manual camera. The lens produces nice bokeh, but again remember that with ISO 400 film and the slowest possible shutter speed of 1/1000sec, it will automatically stop at f/8 if you're outside on a sunny day. Overall I don't think it's a good camera for learning photography because it doesn't have to be handheld and people get lazy, but that doesn't mean the camera is bad. In fact I am very happy with this purchase. Maybe that's because the camera came in very ("like new" very) good condition, although the film advance sometimes didn't work (see last photo attached to this review) - but that only happened twice and that only for the first time.

Pros
  • Confident
Cons
  • Hard to remember but it was
