Review on The Ultimate Precision: OXO Good Grips Pro Y-Peeler Unveiled by Summer Lopez

Great scrub! or "Sweet Potato Story "

I decided to buy this peeler after my current peeler (non-Y, plastic blade, soft handle) became dull and the blade dulled while cooking sweet potatoes broke. I've struggled with this knife for the past few weeks due to the dull blade and its location. My wrist was getting tired from all the lateral movement and only came off in one direction when it actually happened. Preparing a large batch of food (I'm a big fan of roasted vegetables) for a week was exhausting. Once the blade broke I found it easier to peel sweet potatoes with a paring knife. I went to Amazon to find the best solution. I found a few cleaners similar to the one I broke but came across this OXO Professional Y-Shaped Cleaner. At first I was put off by the price - it was a few dollars more expensive than most other options. But I have a few OXO kitchen appliances that are fun and have stood the test of time, so I decided to take a chance and buy them. The spare blade really helped - I don't have to worry about buying another peeler when it gets dull. Less plastic (or metal!) going to landfill is always a plus in my opinion. I was excited for the tool to arrive next week as I had run out of cooked sweet potatoes and was dying to start cooking. The peeler itself is a bit heavy - solid metal construction. The handle is covered in a nice plastic that's a little soft, giving you a really good grip on the tool while using it. The pen itself is beautifully shaped and easy to use. The force required to peel vegetables is evenly distributed and not concentrated on the thumb or forefinger as with my previous vegetable peeler. The blade is bi-directional, so you can clean by sliding the blade forward or backward across the vegetables, which is much more effective. The blade was very sharp when I first used it and I've peeled about 4 medium sized sweet potatoes this week with no problems. I appreciate the included eye on the side of the tool for removing smudges or other problematic bits. The Y-shape was a game changer for me - much more comfortable on the wrist, especially during prolonged use. I found I had more control than with a standard vertical blade (meaning there was less chance of slips and accidents) and was easier to use overall. I am very happy to have this tool in my kitchen arsenal. I really appreciate durable things that do their job well, and this OXO peeler ticks all of those boxes. Bonus points if it can make my life easier what it does. Highly recommended.

Pros
  • Longer blade for better maneuverability
Cons
  • It's ok
