Addendum: After a month of use, everything works as it should, except that if you just want to toast a slice of bread, you have to turn down the dark setting. Otherwise, you'll end up with a piece of toast that's much darker on one side than the other. The outside of the toaster stays cool. The so-called "lift" lever function is useless for something like an English muffin, so watch your fingers! . And like many modern toasters, temperature control is the cheapest type of resistance control that just doesn't last long and stays consistent over time, but I expected it. I chose this toaster because it got fewer bad reviews than the others and it's not too expensive. Once you read some of the reviews you will realize that whichever product you choose you will likely be disappointed, so don't set your goals too high. Consumers used to be able to count on America's home appliances to be reliable and nearly bulletproof - nothing more.
