Review on πŸ’‘ Ledy 33W 9.84 Inch LED Ceiling Light Fixtures - Energy-efficient Replacement Panel Retrofit Board Bulb (White) by Heather Sanchez

Revainrating 2 out of 5

Cheap and functional. (but not for long!)

Edit: The lamp is struggling now, almost exactly a year since I bought it. I have adjusted my rating accordingly. The round twin bulb fluorescent lamp (T5/T9) in my pantry has been a problem since I installed it 8 years ago. I installed it because I was tired of replacing incandescent and CFL bulbs in a cheap Edison plastic light fixture that the contractor originally used. Unfortunately, the circular lamp had a habit of "eating" lightbulbs. At $10-15, it got expensive to replace both bulbs every few years as there was no savings compared to an incandescent bulb, not to mention the fixture was mounted on a sloping ceiling about 10 feet above sea level. what makes it a lot harder than just screwing in an old-fashioned lightbulb. The end finally came two weeks ago when the lights just stopped working. A quick check confirmed the ballast had failed, taking both bulbs with it. When I saw $40 for a new fixture with no bulbs, or $25 for a new ballast and the same amount for bulbs, I decided to take a chance. A new bulb would cost less than $10 and would be better than the original plastic bulb installed by the manufacturer. , but also seemed to go backwards with the screw-in LED lamp. Restoring a lamp with a new ballast meant throwing away good money after bad money. A new light fixture seemed like a good option, but I hate installing ceiling lights because I'm lazy. A search for new bulbs here at Revain turned up about half a dozen LED retrofit kits ranging in price from the ridiculous to the reasonable. I chose this model based on the reviews and looking at the photos. Installation was ridiculously easy for my setup: unplug the switch that powers the light and make sure the black wire isn't "hot". Remove the ballast (two screws in my case) and cut the wires that power the ballast. Drill out the rivets that hold the lamp ring brackets in place. Place the LED "plate" onto the mount, allowing the included magnets to hold it in place, and adjust as needed. Wires into a terminal connected to a voltage converter for LEDs. Attach the converter to the base of the lamp with magnets and connect it to the connector on the LED "plate". Turn on the power. To use! The light is subjectively at least twice as bright as the fluorescent bulbs it replaced, but that may be due to defective bulbs and ballasts. If this goes on for 5 years, I'll be overjoyed. Cons: The circuit board that holds the LEDs is a bit flimsy. The solder points where the 12V connector is soldered to the board are not protected/covered in any way. Yes, it's low voltage, but it can still bite you. The solder also conforms to ROHS tin solder with all sorts of disadvantages. The lamps are sent in an envelope which Revain then packs in a soft mailer. It feels very fragile when you hold it in your hands as you can actually feel the flexing of the circuit board. Mine arrived undamaged but I guess I got lucky. I would give it 5 stars apart from the cheap packaging and questionable PCB quality. That being said, it's incredible value for the dollar and if it lasts more than a few years I'll be ahead of the dollar and easily replaceable.

Pros
  • understandable for the old one
Cons
  • Some problems
