I have 4E wide feet and even wide brands of snowboard boots can be snug. I recent purchased Burton Step-on Wide Photons and was experiencing the dreaded hotspot by my pinkie toe. I had yet to thermoform the boot liner, but figured I would give this a try (even though snowboard boots are not an intended as one of the target uses). Follower the instructions and left them in overnight. The next day they were almost roomy in that toe box! Brilliant! Hopefully they stay widened, but I will try to get them heat molded as well. Then put the widener in again if needed.
