They are the same as most of the basic seed starting kits with the top being about the thickness of a plastic 2-liter bottle. You'll get a few years out of these but don't expect to be able to use them for half a decade. The thermometer comes with batteries built in which is a button cell battery. On the back are two buttons that you push to change between Fahrenheit and Celsius and turn on and off. You do need to use something like a pencil to pushing the button if you just push the rubber part it won't change from Fahrenheit to Celsius or vice versa. The tops are a little bit taller than many seed starting that's and so that's a positive.One thing to note the thermometer just drops into the top and so if you lift off the lid and are not careful it can fall outFrankly I think these are worth it for starts that you need to monitor the humidity and temperature for carefully. For your basic everyday seed-starting they're probably Overkill in terms of having the thermometer and the hydrometer for that extra cost.
