We have been using this type of pet door for years and I have ordered 2 replacements when needed. I have two dogs that weigh between 50 and 70 pounds and they both fit through the valve with no problem. The youngest seems to charge the valve as she enters and leaves the house and he will last about 2-3 years with this type of abuse. Eventually the bottom hinge starts to break and a replacement is on the horizon. Not the fault of the Damper himself, but a feral 50-pound dog banging him on the door all day, every day. We live in South Texas and it's installed in a storm door between the house and the glass-enclosed back patio, exposing the outside to extremely hot temperatures in the summer. It keeps warm well and turns on the air conditioning except when the German shepherd is lying on a cool tile indoors with his nose sticking out of the floor valve. I didn't notice any change in my electric bill after we installed the door. It's easy to install/replace, easy to clean and the lid swings back and forth effortlessly with no noticeable resistance, noise or creaks. It's also light enough not to cause any discomfort to the dog while learning to use it. The fact that it's transparent helps a lot as they can see the treat from the other side since I taught them how to use the door.
