Review on SparkFun 15177 Proximity Sensor Breakout by Aaron Bannister

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Works well with the Qwiic port. Note: Measures *proximity*, not actual distance

Tinypico in a 3D printed case. I wasn't quite sure how it would work and if it would give me the distance in centimeters or millimeters, but that's not really what the sensor is reporting. Instead, you get a *Proximity* rating, as well as 2 light measurements, Ambient and White - which I believe are used to detect an object in close proximity based on the light changes. To give a few examples: if the sensor is pointing towards the ceiling, it has an approximation of 2-5; I set the detector to 50 for my cat walking right in front of her, which is about 4 cm or 1.6 inches. As I bring my finger closer and closer, the value goes to hundreds, and then 10,000 or more when I almost touch it. So this value starts at 0 when there is nothing in front of it and increases exponentially as the distance gets shorter. I hope this will be helpful to those trying to use it to measure the distance between two objects. You can *may* calculate the distance based on the approximation, but you need to find a formula for it and calibrate the formula constants based on the ambient light source. It is best used with a threshold above which you trigger an action based on detected proximity of an object. Overall this is a great sensor, perfect for my use case and I love using the Qwiic/Stemma QT connectors. This makes building projects a lot easier and a lot cleaner than using jumper cables and breadboards.

Pros
  • High marks for grip and durability from testers
Cons
  • Not as thick as other picks
