Ideal material for Minecraft paper boxes for STEAM class.

I'm setting up a special workshop for kids where we'll make simple electrical circuits using an LED, coin cell battery, and special copper tape (no wires or soldering). To make it more fun, I made a simple cardboard box with cutouts to make it look like Minecraft Redstone (google it if you don't know). The idea was to assemble the circuit, build a box around it, and the LED would glow through the holes. The session only lasts 45 minutes and I had to allow for the dexterity of small children so I used the laser cutter at Oahu Makerspace to cut out the outline of the box and all the little holes. The box has tabs for assembly and I had to figure out what to use to glue the pieces together. I've looked at regular tape, double sided tape, glue stick, and dispensers that apply glue. Each had their own pros and cons, but all had the same problem, which was that I had to buy a bunch of them and after the event I was left with a ton of almost unused glue. Then I discovered this material. Absolutely perfect material. It's a thin tape with a paper backing on one side. You use it like a regular ribbon. Apply it to the surface and tear or tear off a piece and stick it on. Then peel off the backing paper to reveal the adhesive on the top. The material itself is slightly elastic and relatively thin. And what is the best? I can stick it on the tongues and leave the paper backing. During the jar, students can simply remove the backing and glue the pieces together. It's like those self-adhesive envelopes. This is the perfect solution and if Revane hadn't suggested it I would never have known about it.

Pros
  • Crafts and Sewing
Cons
  • Crumpled Packaging
