I received the HiLetgo ESP32 board on December 31, 2017. "Unfriendly" but with these little gimmicks, it's better to be safe than sorry. If you're using the Arduino IDE, you'll need to install the board library for that hardware either with Git or by downloading the zip file and extracting it manually. If you've ever played around with its little sister (ESP8266) you should be able to do so, although it's not that easy (no board manager as of 12/31/2017). After about 30 minutes of setup I was off and running. A write test is currently running, the page is requested repeatedly. No errors and normal network connection, so the basics of this board seem good after about 18 hours of continuous use. I've spent a lot of time in the past connecting one of the tiny ESP8266 modules to an Arduino, even with a logic level. The converters are in place and the things that communicate everything seem shaky. ESP8266 all-in-one modules are better, but lack the GPIO for heavy lifting. In terms of GPIO, the ESP32 is closer to the Arduino UNO board than the ESP8266. Ideal for remote monitoring/logging of sensors, scoreboards. The Adafruit HUZZAH32 boards are slightly more feature rich and more expensive. If you don't use special features like battery charging, these boards will be the dominant IoT toolbox for gamers, a great addition anyway.
