Review on TRENDnet Wireless Gigabit Pre Encrypted TEW 812DRU by Roy Whetstone

Revainrating 5 out of 5

So far so good in the area of computers and accessories

So far so good. The setup was pretty reliable, so naturally this network engineer forgot to set the ethernet adapter to DHCP and racked his brains for 10 minutes trying to figure out why he couldn't access it. Once this was fixed, reconfiguration for my preferred SSID and other settings was very easy. Port forwarding for my mail and web server worked as expected, as did port address translation for several other services I need to access remotely. ranch) and usable signal on all corners of my 3/4 acre property. The 5GHz band is a different story. While my Roku is very fast in the master bedroom (30 feet and 3 walls from the router), it regularly complains of 2 bars on its surface. The bandwidth in the 2.4 GHz band is more than sufficient, so really not a problem. The router has been running without interruption for 30 days. I have 50 Mbps from my cable company and I get that speed reliably 24/7, wired and wireless. Pros: No public default password; Each device has a unique password printed on the label. The default key for the default SSID is insanely complicated. Nobody is likely to break it with a brute force attack. The default security is WPA2. Works with my Nest thermostat. Supports multiple guest SSIDs and allows you to block access to the internal network (completely different IP network) and block communication between hosts on guest networks. Cons: No SSL support for the management interface. While this is not a big problem on the LAN side, it can be a problem for remote management on the WAN side. WAN remote management is disabled by default, mitigating this oversight. While the default key for the default SSID is very secure, the random names used for the default SSID are a bit odd, to say the least. Some people might be tempted to switch to something simpler (suitable for SSID) and a less secure encryption key (not good). WPS is not disabled by default.

Pros
  • Pre-encrypted for your security
Cons
  • Damaged
