It is difficult for a child to get up. The elastic backing doesn't really stretch, so I think it's more for keeping it in the water. It will be necessary to see how they behave in operation. When it arrived it was packed in 2 bags possibly to hide the horrible smell. As soon as I opened the first bag, I could smell the chemicals. I'm currently keeping it in the sun to see if it helps remove the smell. I would return them but I need them and don't have time to go back and get a new pair for our trip.
