Can be mounted on the inside of the window sill or on the outside, universal bracket. You don't have to be very precise when aligning the brackets either. I just used my fingertips to measure the depth. I'm sure it's a little crooked, but you can't even tell. I was literally able to quickly install this myself with a simple hand screwdriver. It took me a full minute to screw in both brackets and snap the lampshade into the brackets. I bought a size a few inches longer than I measured to make sure there was no gap at the bottom. Works great, it kept out so much heat from the penetrating sun, my kitchen seems a lot cooler.
