For the smallest filters

This is a good way to protect juvenile fish, small invertebrates and thin fins from damage caused by the filter's air intake. As a bonus, sponges provide a large surface area for beneficial bacteria to grow. It's perfect for my tiny 5 gallon beginner filter. Don't forget to remove it when you do your maintenance and squeeze the remaining dirt into a bowl of aquarium water.
