Connects automatically, but that's where the good news ends. You have to be right in front of it to work. A little annoying, but it works in the end. You just have to wrestle with it a little. EDIT: So I just needed new batteries which I thought I put in originally. Totally my fault and my apologies for blaming the manufacturer for user error. Actually works very well. I will upgrade to 5 stars
