Review on Toshiba DVR610 Upconverting Tunerless Recorder by Dangelo Toliver

Revainrating 5 out of 5

This is a great DVR VCR!

I bought this unit to copy old VHS tapes to DVD. I have about 200 VHS tapes to copy and this is my third attempt at finding good gear to work with. My first attempt was with separate devices, a JVC HR-S5975EK Super VHS VCR (very rare) and an RCA DVR device. The RCA DVR burned out after about 30 discs and was extremely difficult to use. It also turned out that there were as many stalls as there were playable DVDs. My second attempt was an RCA DRC8335 DVD recorder and VCR with a built in tuner (TUMP! TUMP! TUMP! That's the sound when I kick myself from behind). This unit was so bad it's beyond words. It has a 1 star rating on Revain.com. Most think he should have a zero rating. The only thing worse than this unit is the RCA customer support which resulted in me filing a complaint with the BBB which RCA tried to remove by lying to the BBB and claiming they refunded the money, although in fact they never called. me, and a year later, after numerous calls, the problem is still not solved. But enough about RCA, let's talk about how awesome this machine is. All I can say is that it does exactly what I want it to do, with the press of a button. Just insert a VHS tape and a blank DVD-R and press DUBBING. That's all! It is so easy. Most of the time I just leave it on and when I come back all I have to do is finalize the disc. The only problem I had was with a VHS tape that had spaces between videos. This device monitors the video stream and stops burning to DVD when the feed stops. This bothered me initially because the other devices (RCA) I had would let me down if I tried to keep writing to the same drive. Not this unit. I just scrolled the feed to the point where the video started again and clicked DUBBING. Once the cassette was fully recorded and I finished the disc, it worked perfectly as if it had been recorded normally. Bottom line, this is Toshiba and they don't make junk like some other companies I know (RCA). The last Toshiba I owned was a VCR and I had it for over 10 years before giving it to a friend who still uses it (13 years now). Buy Toshiba, you won't regret it.
